Experiment 2 - feedback

Kheim Nguyen

Key strength of the scheme: some excellent form making that relates well to the chosen clients

Most significant weakness of the scheme: lack of natural light and choice of materials, need to work more with how light changes surfaces, and the texture of materials

Zumeng Zhang

Key strength of the scheme: well crafted axonometrics

Most significant weakness of the scheme: lack of light and shadow in the architecture and arbitrary choice of materials

Xiaojing Lu

Key strength of the scheme: the architecture uses mystery and ‘the hidden secret from’ well

Most significant weakness of the scheme: use of light, why purple try to use natural light colours, use a ramp not stairs

Peili Ye

Key strength of the scheme: the architecture, well composed, excellent use of light, materials and texture, good posters. Cousteau’s lab the giant trap.

Most significant weakness of the scheme: keith campbells quote, wrong keith Campbell, 36 textures

Sisi Wang

Key strength of the scheme: the monumentality of the architecture, some interesting openings and the shadows that these openings create, the layout of the posters

Most significant weakness of the scheme: the scanning of the axonometrics is lousy, a lot of unnecessary elements in the architecture

Najwa Tasin

Key strength of the scheme: the strong use of axis for the ramp, consistency of forms,

Most significant weakness of the scheme: light helps greatly to determine the mood, your use of light makes the labs feel cold and sterile, more care to scan in the axonometrics

Reginald Santos

Key strength of the scheme: quotes are good

Most significant weakness of the scheme: no light in the architecture, if there is no light then there is no shadow and there is no depth

Hong Qui

Key strength of the scheme: ramp in the large abyss

Most significant weakness of the scheme: the colour textures in the model are just a gimmick and detract from the spatial qualities of the project, more care with the axonmetrics

James Metcalfe

Key strength of the scheme: the captured images are well composed as is the architectural form and strong architectural spaces, good use of light

Most significant weakness of the scheme: the use of materials is inconsistent, the textures are drawn as light to medium light, the axonometrics lack a diversity of forms and thicknesses, depth is ok

Julia Luechtefeld

Key strength of the scheme: some excellent captured images of the architecture, powerful and and dramatic in a still manner

Most significant weakness of the scheme: strong solid carved out forms are broken apart by your use of materials

Alan Leones

Key strength of the scheme: the origami ramp

Most significant weakness of the scheme: the darkness, no light means no shadow and no materiality, the draft model materials and light are much better, the 36 textures are too varied to show light to dark

Harry Kavetsos

Key strength of the scheme: nice use of light in the architecture

Most significant weakness of the scheme: ramps vs stepped ramps, try using ramps next time, too many materials and textures in the architecture, it is not a case of more is better exercise control. The 36 textures are too varied to show degradation from light to dark

Seung Jin Jeon

Key strength of the scheme: consistent use of materials

Most significant weakness of the scheme: the froms have a thinness which is disturbing you need to work on this, it looks too much like folded paper, ok if deliberate and well crafted, but this looks like a mistake

Angus Hardwick

Key strength of the scheme: the drama of cousteau’s lab is excellent

Most significant weakness of the scheme: the scale of the chosen texture is too large, this breaks up the materiality of the excellent forms, try again using the texture at a smaller scale to see the difference

Michael Diedricks

Key strength of the scheme: the 36 textures are well crafted

Most significant weakness of the scheme: no light in the model has flattened the spaces and sucked the life out of it. If you are unsure what materials to use then use only 1

Zhen Chin

Key strength of the scheme: the shear care and effort is to be commended, well crafted architecture consistent to a concept, clever arrangement, excellent axonometrics and good exploration of ideas

Most significant weakness of the scheme: apart from the tornado mass, the spaces are quite static

Richard Carter

Key strength of the scheme: good research into spaces, the cracks and crevices are very dramatic

Most significant weakness of the scheme: use of light is not as successful try using a yellow light not a blue one, openings that let light in should be thick and show depth, the thickness allows for reflected light as well as direct light, it is this combination that matters

Michael Berman

Key strength of the scheme: the falling cube

Most significant weakness of the scheme: lack of care in particular with the hand drawings

Divya Abraham

Key strength of the scheme: good investigation with the ramps

Most significant weakness of the scheme: scale of the texture is far too large, it needs to be smaller to gain repetition. Neater drawings please

Experiment 1 - Feedback

the intention of publishing the feedback below is so that all students can benefit by understanding the strengths and weakness’ of a range of projects. Please take the time to review other students work with these comments in mind. If you have any questions or would like any further clarification don’t hesitate to ask me during the studio session.

Khiem Nguyen

Key strength of the scheme: Consistency of forms and relation to the words chosen

Most significant weakness of the scheme: use of textures, too many

Zumeng Zhang

Key strength of the scheme: the domed spaces

Most significant weakness of the scheme: the underground not really a carved out space

Xiaojing lu

Key strength of the scheme: limited choice of materials

Most significant weakness of the scheme: the lack of order in the use of the materials

Xi Zhang

extension granted due to illness

Peilli Ye

Key strength of the scheme: composition of the underground and floating form above

Most significant weakness of the scheme: glass box to the left of the floating object destroys the notion of the object truly floating.

Sisi Wang

Key strength of the scheme: consistent theme, composition, animations with music

Most significant weakness of the scheme: not quite a complete harmonious piece of architecture, very close though. Keep up the good work

Najwa Tasin

Key strength of the scheme: spiral stair

Most significant weakness of the scheme: the final architecture, dislocated and uninteresting

Tanya Shumsky

Key strength of the scheme: use of repetition, the thick screen, should have been on both sides

Most significant weakness of the scheme: lack of coming to terms with the underground space, it is carved out of a mass, yours makes the ground look like it is a floor that is floating

Reginald Santos

Key strength of the scheme: is  step up from an ordinary building

Most significant weakness of the scheme: is an ordinary piece of architecture, lack of effort, you need to try much harder, have a look at the other students work

Hong Qui

Key strength of the scheme: the stairs, overall composition

Most significant weakness of the scheme: use of textures and the understanding of carved out space in the underground

James Metcalfe

Key strength of the scheme: architectural expression of power, effort placed into the final sketchup model , use of texture, overall well done

Most significant weakness of the scheme: the floating timber platform should seem more floating, the inability to feel in tension in the underground spaces

Julia Luechtefeld

Key strength of the scheme: good development of a very good section. Tried hard to find the tension needed

Most significant weakness of the scheme: use of texture, didn’t exaggerate enough the idea of the building floating above the datum / ground

Alan Leones

Key strength of the scheme: just did what was required

Most significant weakness of the scheme: failure to improve on the section, should be abridge between the objects and the objects could hide the spaces. A very ordinary piece of architecture with no surprise mystery or adventure

 Harry Kavestos

Key strength of the scheme: underground studio is a dynamic space

Most significant weakness of the scheme: above ground space is a decorated box and lacks tension and excitement and exaggeration that should be in a good piece of architecture

Seung Jin Jeon

Key strength of the scheme: sticking to the repetition of the forms

Most significant weakness of the scheme: the understanding of the datum the building above the ground should allow for the gallery beneath it. Not finished with animations

Angus Hardwick

Key strength of the scheme: the dramatic underground and the stair down to this space, the overall tension between the two worlds great use of textures

Most significant weakness of the scheme: need to render the ground as solid. Or at least give the underground dome a good sized wall thickness

Michael Diedricks

Key strength of the scheme: the underground maze fits the word grow exceptionally well

Most significant weakness of the scheme: the above ground studio is an ordinary building, there is no mystery or excitement, the form also contradicts itself, if curved and organic then be so to an extreme

Zhen Chin

Key strength of the scheme: the ramp like stair and the floating doughnut

Most significant weakness of the scheme: the doughnut is truncated at the bottom limiting the effects of floating and the use of texture is random. The underground has no reason to its form

Richard Carter

Key strength of the scheme: some good sections, the linkage of spaces

Most significant weakness of the scheme: too many spaces, not enough thought into the words and light entering the spaces, try to make it more simple but more extreme, walls have thicknesses

Michael Berman

Key strength of the scheme: great interpretation of the underground space

Most significant weakness of the scheme: the above ground studio needs more work, the pipes should be coming up from the water like the Fiona hall piece. Some good work where are your textures?

Divya Abraham

Key strength of the scheme: the below ground studio is an excellent space, the above ground composition is good from  a distance

Most significant weakness of the scheme: the above ground needs more work, more of the spikes, closer together to walk over a new landscape would help to create a more powerful piece of architecture, keep trying

All the best with experiment 2
